Howdy Class of 2024!
Congratulations on your decision to come to Texas A&M University, we are so excited to have you! Even though we can’t see you in person during your New Student Conference, we hope that this page will answer any questions you might have about our organization.
Who are we?
The Texas A&M Century Singers is a seventy-member mixed choir comprised of undergraduate and graduate students. Our director, Mr. Travis Angel, has been with us since 2017, and he has years of experience teaching music in other Texas institutions.
What do we sing?
Most of our repertoire includes spiritual, folk, and contemporary music by composers from all around the world. This past year alone we learned music by Stacey V. Gibbs, Francisco Feliciano, Moses Hogan, and Freddie Mercury along with many other composers. We also had artists such as the Queen’s Six choral ensemble as well as Stacey V. Gibbs come as guest directors during rehearsal.
What do our concerts look like?
Many of our concerts are performed on campus or at nearby churches or venues. Some of our past venues include the Ice House on Main, Southside Social Club, Christ United Methodist Church, and even the Music Activities Center itself. At least once every year, we also go on a local tour where we perform at venues in other Texas cities such as Houston, Austin, or Dallas. Every three years, we have the opportunity to go on an international tour at the end of the Spring semester. We were scheduled to go on tour in Spain and Portugal this spring, but the trip was unfortunately canceled due to COVID-19 concerns.
When are rehearsals?
Rehearsals for Century Singers are every Monday and Wednesday from 1:35pm – 2:25pm and every Tuesday and Thursday from 1:30pm – 2:45pm. All of our rehearsals this year will be masked and socially-distanced in the band hall of the Music Activities Center on George Bush Dr. Every semester you are enrolled in Century Singers will earn you one hour of class credit, and your grade will be included in your GPA and transcript. Don’t worry, there aren’t any exams! Our grading system is based on attendance and fundraising, so it’s a great way to get credit while having fun!
How do I audition?
To schedule an audition for any choir for the 2020-2021 academic year, contact Mr. David Kipp at email@example.com or click HERE to register for an audition.
Auditions are required for membership in any of our choirs, and we encourage you to try out! We have many members that have been in their high school choirs or band and some that have never sung in a choir before and just enjoy singing and performing! If you are interested in setting up an audition, please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org or click HERE to register for an audition.
No preparation is required for the audition. An audition consists of singing My Country, ‘Tis of Thee (music provided and sent to you in advance) in multiple keys, and simple sight-reading. Auditions are conducted by the director of the choir for which you are auditioning.
-Monday/Wednesday: 1:35-2:25 PM AND Tuesday/Thursday: 1:30-2:45 PM
Yes, we are a choir by name, but we are so much more than just a musical outlet for our members. As Aggies, we naturally have our own set of traditions that make us a unique group on campus. We also have numerous social events that give everyone a chance to hang out and get to know each other better. When you join Century Singers, you make 70 instant friends. Don’t believe us? We dare you to come audition. You’ll make lifelong friends AND wonderful music, we guarantee it.
One hour credit is required for this ensemble (MUSC 290-501)
